Looking for your next perfect overnight stop? Staircase Range Rest Area on the Dawson Highway (about 20km south of Springsure) is a great little free camp that is well worth a one or two night stay! The short dirt track leading in from the highway is not bad at all – just drive to the conditions.
At the rear of the camping area, you can explore an interesting historic site. Walk the old road cutting carved straight out of the sandstone mountainside in 1905. It was built entirely by hand by Chinese labourers using basic hand tools. Walking through it really makes you appreciate the smooth, modern highway range crossing we use today!
For us, this was an absolute top spot and we enjoyed overnighting here.
