Kalpowar State Forest, Qld

Kalpowar was a fantastic State Forest to spend a few days.  This State Forest is around 40km from the country town of Monto.  Even though it’s a popular campsite, especially on weekends, it felt incredibly tranquil with plenty of space for everyone to spread out.

Things you need to know before you go:

  • Pre-book your campsite via Queensland National Parks Online Booking Service
  • Well-maintained grassy sites set in an open forest
  • Access road is unsealed; 4WD recommended, just drive to conditions
  • Digital detox site – no mobile coverage here
  • Clean long-drop toilets
  • Tank water available (treat or boil before use)
  • Picnic tables and shelters
  • Fireplaces onsite (remember to BYO firewood)
  • Dog friendly, on leash
  • Leave no trace – take all your rubbish with you

The Barrimoon Rail Tunnels are about 2km from the Kalpowar State Forest Campground and are well worth visiting.

Supplies and fuel are available in Monto, which is a great little town to visit.

We highly recommend checking out Kalpowar State Forest if you are road-tripping through the area!
