Gunnewin Soldier Settlement Memorial and Old Rail Siding, Maranoa Region, Qld

Now a rural locality found 16 kilometres south of Injune, Gunnewin was once a thriving small town that served the needs of returned soldier settlers who were part of the Mount Hutton Lands Soldier Settlement Scheme in the region.  The town was located by the Roma to Injune branch rail line, and today the old rail siding can still be found here.

This branch line had a pivotal role in supporting the the Soldier Settlement Scheme which was a World War I Federal Government initiative.  Returned soldiers undertook mixed farming, cotton growing, and dairy farming.

There is a striking memorial to the soldier settlers here, made from local sandstone. We were engaged in the wealth of information and images contained here on story boards scattered in the vicinity.

Well worth a stop if travelling between Roma and Injune.
